Your Minecraft world keeps track of items that you drop, right? Are there any tools or editors that can show you where those dropped items are so you can find your way back to where you died?

That's logical unless a creeper comes out of the dark and kills you before you can check.

I didn't think you could press f3 when the respawn button appeared. I'll try that next time. Unfortunately I have already respawned. Can any map viewers locate dropped blocks/items?

Feet and a map work well
Seriously though, Minecraft does not store locations in a post-temp variable, thus it is impossible to retrieve.

Certainly you could take an SDK like Substrate or pymclevel and either scan chunks for the most recent modification time, or a cluster of "diverse" item entities, and it would probably be easy to write. I don't know of any existing program that will do that, however.
If you're not up for writing code, your best alternative is probably to open your world in a recent version of MCedit and search for a dense cluster of entities.
